Polish Most Common Foreign Language
For the first time, Polish is now the most common foreign
language in Icelandic schools, instead of English.
According to the Statistical Bureau of Iceland,
there are more and more children who speak a native tongue
other than Icelandic in schools here.
Last year, 2.8 per cent of all secondary school pupils
had a foreign mother tongue. Pupils with Polish as
a mother tongue increased by more than 20 per cent
in the last two years. Nearly 70 per cent of these pupils
live outside of Reykjavík.
Pupils with English as a mother tongue number 177.
Pupils with Pilipino as a mother tongue number 107,
and pupils with Thai as a mother tongue number 105.
