Why am I waiting?
You're waiting in a line with hundreds of other gamers to get all kinds of different files here at FileShack. We can only afford so much bandwidth to give out though and instead of forcing people to just hammer the refresh button trying to get the file we've built the line system. Sadly the reality of these days is that bandwidth does cost money, and we're giving away as much as we can reasonably afford.
This line is just like any other in the world like you'd be in waiting for a rollercoaster or buying a burger. The more people in the line, the longer the wait will be. So on a big demo day release the lines will likely be longer as more people all show up at once wanting that file.
Everyone cant possibly be in line for this file!?
They aren't, along the lines of the same burger stand analogy, different people are in line for different files but we still have only one line per server to keep things efficient and simple.
Why the cap of 100k/s?
Simply, this is to keep bandwidth usage predictable so we can let in more people at once. Without a cap in place we have to limit our downloads to less people at a time because we have no idea if a guy is going to eat up 5MB/s of bandwidth and shoot our bill through the roof. When we know that people wont be going over 100k/s we can let more in at a time. We're still giving away the same amount of bandwidth, it's just more consistently and evenly spread out now for the free users.
Why is the download link only valid for 5 minutes?
This is also due to being efficient with our bandwidth. The whole point of the line system is to keep bandwidth usage predictable so we can keep offering this service. If someone is in front of you in line, and then steps out of line to go some place else do you want that guy chewing up that space in line all day long?
Can I get by the 100k/s cap?
Yes, Mercury subscribers have no cap. The money spent by Mercury members allows us to uncap the bandwidth for these members.
Can I skip by the line?
Yes, Mercury subscribers have their own private connections which you could call the express lane. For the cost of a coffee and danish at Starbucks you can have all the gaming files you want and more.
